Pricing Long Hauls and Dumpster Drops on a Junk Removal Estimate

Two kinds of jobs break a simple load-based price list. The first is the job way out past your normal area, where the drive costs as much as the work. The second is the customer who wants a dumpster dropped off for a week while they clean out at their own pace. Both are good business if you price them right.

When Distance Changes the Job

The Waiting List, covered in Using the Waiting List Map to Fit New Junk Removal Estimates Into the Week, helps you group jobs that are close together. Some jobs simply are not close to anything.

A half load across the street from your yard and a half load forty minutes out in the country take the same space on the truck. They do not cost the same. The far one burns fuel, crew time and part of the day, and if the dump is back near town, the truck makes that drive twice.

Haul Miles on the Property

JunkBossPro lets you record measurements on each property, including haul miles, cubic yards and items. Services can be priced off them. That gives you a fair, consistent way to handle distance:

The customer sees exactly why their price is higher than the neighbor's across town, and the crew gets paid for the drive.

Setting Your Service Area

Decide where your normal pricing stops. Some companies draw a simple line: anything within a set distance of the yard is standard pricing, and anything past it gets a haul charge. Others use towns or zip codes. Either way, write it down so whoever answers the phone quotes it the same way.

For very far jobs, consider whether the work is worth it at all. A large cleanout out in the country might be. A single mattress probably is not, unless you can group it with other jobs out there. The Waiting List map helps you see whether anything else is nearby.

Dumpster Drops

Some customers want to work at their own pace. They are clearing out a house over a few weekends, or doing a remodel, and they want somewhere to put it all. If you also leave a dumpster, JunkBossPro lets you record dumpster drop days on the job: the number of days included in the price, then a daily rate past that.

On the estimate, that might look like:

Spell out what happens if the customer keeps it longer, and how weight is handled when the dumpster is picked up. Dumpsters get filled with heavy material more often than trucks do, because the customer is loading it without a crew watching.

Weight Still Matters

Whether it is a long haul or a dumpster, the overage rule should be on the estimate. Enter the tons from the dump ticket, the tons included and your per-ton rate, and JunkBossPro adds the overage to the invoice automatically, like “Dump fee overage (0.28 tons @ $70.00) = $19.60.” Choosing those numbers is covered in Choosing the Included Tons and Per-Ton Rate Behind Your Junk Pricing.

Scheduling Far Jobs and Drops

Once the customer approves the estimate online, it becomes the scheduled job. For long hauls, the dispatch board lets you put the job on a day when a truck can make the trip without wrecking the rest of the route. Auto-route Furthest First from the yard can help when the far job should be first or last in the day.

For dumpster drops, the drop-off and the pickup both need to be on the schedule. The crew sees each one on their phone in route order, with access notes about where to place the dumpster and where it is going when it comes back.

It helps to put your service area on your website and request form too, so customers far away know before they ask that a haul charge may apply. Nobody likes being surprised by a line they did not expect, and a sentence on the website saves the office from explaining it on every call.

Be Clear, Not Clever

Long-haul and dumpster pricing work best when they are simple and visible. A separate line for distance, a clear number of included days, a daily rate and the weight rule are easy for customers to understand and easy for your team to quote.
