Cash Flow for a One-Truck Junk Removal Owner

When you run one truck, you are the crew, the office, the estimator and the accountant. You pay for fuel every day and dump fees on every run. The truck payment comes due whether it rained all week or not. Cash flow is not an abstract business idea for you. It is whether there is money in the account on Friday.

Knowing Your Numbers Comes First

Reports are covered in Junk Removal Billing Reports: What Was Invoiced, What Was Paid and What Is Still Out. For a one-truck owner, the most useful number is the gap between what you invoiced and what you collected. This article is about shrinking that gap.

None of this is financial advice. It is the practical side of billing: habits that get money from the job into your account faster.

Get Paid the Day You Work

Every day between finishing a job and getting paid is a day you are funding the customer's junk removal out of your own pocket. You already paid for the fuel and the dump. The simplest cash flow fix is to collect the same day.

In JunkBossPro, when you tap Complete in the crew app, the invoice is created from the job and the card on file can be charged right there. Auto-charge on completion makes it automatic. For a one-truck owner, that means you finish the job, tap a button, and drive to the next stop already paid.

That only works with a card on file, so ask every new customer for one. Your website sign-up form can capture it, and customers can add one in the customer app.

Bill the Weight Every Time

Dump fees are one of your biggest costs, and on heavy loads they can eat a job's profit. Enter the tons from the ticket, and if the load went over the included weight, the overage is added to the invoice automatically, for example “Dump fee overage (0.28 tons @ $70.00) = $19.60.” Small amounts add up across a season. Billing them every time instead of when you remember is money you were already owed.

Take Money Up Front on Big Jobs

A three-load estate cleanout can mean several dump runs and a full day or two of fuel before you see a dollar. For jobs that size, bill an up-front amount as its own invoice or line item when the estimate is approved, then bill the balance at completion. That covers your costs while you work and confirms the customer will not cancel the night before. The approach is in Deposits on Big Junk Removal Cleanouts: Billing Up Front With a Separate Invoice.

Be Careful With Monthly Accounts

Property managers and realtors are great steady work. But a Monthly account means you do the work all month and get paid after the statement goes out. For a one-truck owner, a large account paying slowly can tie up a lot of your cash.

A few ways to keep that in check:

Fill the Truck

Cash flow is also about how much work you do per gallon of fuel. A route with three jobs in the same part of town makes more than a route with three jobs at opposite ends of the county. The Waiting List map shows every unbooked request, so you can see which ones are near tomorrow's route and book them together. Single items and small loads fit in around bigger jobs, so the truck is earning between cleanouts.

Get Your Evenings Back

When you run one truck, every hour spent on paperwork at night is an hour you are not resting for tomorrow. Invoices built from the job, charged at completion, with tax and overage added for you, mean there is very little left to do after the truck is parked. That is not a cash number, but it is what keeps a one-truck owner going long enough to buy the second truck.

A Simple Weekly Routine

Plans start at $59 a month on Start, which covers billing and the crew app for a one-truck operation.

Money In, Faster

One truck can run a healthy business if the money comes in as fast as the work goes out. To see how charging at completion, auto-charge and dump fee overage fit together, visit the JunkBossPro junk removal invoicing software page.
