Showing Customers Their Junk Removal Visit Day and the Truck on the Map

Junk removal customers usually have to do something before the crew arrives. Open the garage. Move the car out of the driveway. Put the dog inside. Drag the mattress to the bottom of the stairs, or at least be home to open the door. A customer who knows exactly when the truck is coming is a customer who is ready. One who doesn't know is a fifteen-minute wait in their driveway.

Part of the Customer App

Everything else the customer app does, requesting service, signing up, cards, invoices, ratings and referrals, is covered in The Customer App: Letting Junk Removal Customers Request Service Themselves. This guide is about the scheduling side: the visit day and the live map.

The Visit Day

Once a job is assigned to a truck and a day, the customer can see that day in the customer app. That sounds simple, but it removes a lot of back-and-forth:

If you move the job to another day, the customer sees the new day. Text them too, so the change doesn't surprise them, but the app will always show the current plan.

The Live Route Map

On the day itself, the customer can watch the route on a live map in the customer app. They see their place in line, something like:

That is far more useful than a time window. “Between 8 and 12” leaves a customer staring out the window for four hours. “Five stops away” tells them they have time to finish breakfast, and “one stop away” tells them to go open the garage.

The map works because the crew is working from the same route. The jobs are in route order on the crew's phone, and as they Start and Complete each stop, the customer's place in line updates.

Why This Matters More for Junk Removal

Some trades can do the job whether the customer is home or not. Junk removal often can't. The items are inside the house, in a locked garage, in a basement. When the customer isn't ready:

A customer who can see the truck coming has the garage open when it pulls in. That keeps the whole route on time, which keeps every later customer happy too.

Pair It With Alerts

Not every customer will think to open the app. Alerts bring the information to them. Customers choose their alerts: the night before, when they're next, and when the crew arrives. A customer who gets a “you're next” text and taps through to see the truck on the map is the most prepared customer you will have all day. Alerts get their own guide next: Night-Before, Next-Stop and Arrived Alerts for Junk Removal Customers.

Privacy on the Map

Customers seeing the truck's progress doesn't mean they see other customers' addresses or names. The point of the map is “how far away is my crew,” not a list of who else you are hauling for today. Your crews' locations are shown to the office on the office map through crew GPS, and the customer sees the progress that matters to their own stop.

When Nobody Is Home

Some junk removal jobs don't need the customer there: items left at the curb, a garage left open, a vacant rental. For those, the visit day still matters, because the customer has to put the items out or leave the door open. Put the instructions in the access notes, like “Items on the driveway by 8am,” so the crew knows what to expect, and the customer can check the app to see when the job is done.

Tell Customers It Exists

The live map only cuts calls if customers know about it. Mention it in the booking confirmation: “On your pickup day you can watch our truck on the map in our customer app and see how many stops away we are.” When someone calls asking where the crew is, answer them, then mention the map for next time.

Realtors and property managers love it for a different reason. They are often not at the property, and the map tells them when to send the tenant or the lockbox code.
