Quoting Hot Tub Removal: Access, Cutting, Weight and the Haul

An old hot tub is one of the most common “big thing” calls a junk company gets. It has not run in years, the cover is torn, and the customer wants the deck back. Hot tubs look like a single item, but they take more time, more hands and more truck space than almost anything else on a residential job. Quoting them like a couch is how you lose money.

Not Just Another Single Item

Hoarding cleanouts, covered in Quoting a Hoarding Cleanout Respectfully: Privacy, Pace and a Price the Family Can Trust, are big because of volume. Hot tubs are big in one piece.

A hot tub is heavy, awkward and often sitting somewhere it was never meant to leave: behind a fence, on a raised deck, under a pergola or in a back yard with a narrow side gate. Most need to be cut into sections before they can be carried out. That is why hot tub removal belongs on your service list as its own service, priced for the work, not squeezed into a load size.

Questions to Ask Before You Quote

Ask the customer to text or email photos of the tub and the full path to the street. A photo of the side gate with something for scale is worth more than a description.

Access Drives the Price

A tub on a slab next to a wide driveway might be a short, simple job. The same tub on a second-story deck behind a narrow gate is an afternoon. Build that difference into the quote:

For unusual setups, an on-site estimate visit is a job on the schedule in JunkBossPro, easy to fit into a day when a truck is nearby.

Weight and the Dump

Hot tubs are heavy, and some of that weight is in the frame, the shell and the equipment. If your hot tub price includes a set weight at the dump, say so, and include your per-ton rate past it. JunkBossPro adds dump fee overage from the ticket automatically when the tons go over what is included, like “Dump fee overage (0.28 tons @ $70.00) = $19.60.”

Some parts may go to a metal recycler instead of the dump. JunkBossPro records where a job is hauled to, and the crew gets a Go button to navigate there.

Crew Size and Tools

Hot tubs usually need more than one person and the right tools for cutting. Make sure the crew assigned to the job knows what they are walking into. The job card on the crew's phone shows the item, what is going (“6-person hot tub on back deck, cover and steps going too”) and the access notes (“Side gate 36 inches, go through the garage instead”).

Schedule hot tubs on the truck that handles big jobs, not the single-item route. The dispatch board shows jobs by day and truck, so it is easy to give a hot tub job the time it needs.

Writing the Estimate

A hot tub estimate built from your service list might read:

Send it for online approval. Once approved, it becomes the scheduled job with every line carried over. If you quote several hot tubs a month, save this as an estimate template.

Bundling With the Rest

Hot tub customers often have more: old patio furniture, a broken grill, a pile of wood from the deck. Ask. A hot tub plus a quarter load of patio clutter on the same trip is a better job for you and a better deal for them. Shed teardowns often come up on the same call; they are covered in Quoting a Shed Teardown and Haul-Away From the Backyard to the Dump.
