Quoting Yard Waste and Light Construction Debris by the Load

Not every junk call is about furniture. Spring brings piles of branches, old landscape timbers and bags of leaves. A weekend remodel leaves drywall scraps, old cabinets, carpet and a pile of lumber. These are good, steady jobs for a junk removal company, but they behave differently on the truck and at the scale than a living room full of couches.

Different From Household Junk

Pricing from your own costs, covered in Pricing Your Own Junk Removal Services From Your Own Costs, matters most on jobs like these, because weight can swing the cost so much.

Yard waste can be bulky and light (branches, brush) or dense and heavy (wet leaves, sod, dirt). Construction debris ranges from light (packaging, trim, old cabinets) to very heavy (tile, plaster, concrete, roofing). The same load size can mean very different dump bills. That is why these jobs need two answers on the quote: how much space, and how much weight.

Questions to Ask

Ask for photos by text or email, with something in the frame for scale.

Price by the Load, Mention the Weight

Load pricing still works well for most yard and debris jobs. Pick the load size from your service list: quarter, half, three-quarter, full or more. Then make sure the estimate is clear about weight:

In JunkBossPro, the tons from the dump ticket go on the job, and anything over the included tons is added to the invoice automatically, like “Dump fee overage (0.28 tons @ $70.00) = $19.60.” Light brush jobs will usually stay under the line. Heavy remodel debris may not, and the customer already knows the rule.

Separate Lines for Separate Services

Some companies keep yard waste and debris as their own services on the list, apart from household load sizes, because they load and dump differently. That might look like:

Whether you split them out or use the same load sizes for everything is up to you. Splitting makes the estimate clearer and gives you room to price heavy material properly.

Where It Goes

Yard waste and debris often go to a different drop-off than household junk. Some transfer stations take yard waste separately. Metal from a remodel might go to a metal recycler. JunkBossPro records where each job is hauled to: dump, transfer station, donation center or metal recycler. The crew gets a Go button on their phone to navigate there, so nobody heads to the wrong place with a load of branches.

Contractors and Repeat Work

Remodelers, handymen and landscapers can become steady customers. They have debris every week and no time to haul it. Treat them like any other client with many addresses: one client, each job site as its own address, and each job priced from your service list. If they want one bill, monthly account billing gives them one statement each month covering every address, with each line labeled.

For property managers and realtors, the same setup works. See Quoting Apartment Trash-Outs for Property Managers and Realtors.

Bags, Bundles and Loose Piles

How the material is packed changes the labor. Bagged leaves and bundled branches load quickly. A loose brush pile tangled with vines, or a heap of drywall scraps full of screws and nails, takes much longer. If you see loose material in the photos, price the extra time, either with a larger load size or an extra labor line on your service list.

You can also offer the customer a choice: “If you bag the leaves before we come, it's the half load. If they're loose, add the labor line.” Many customers are happy to do some of the work to save money.

On the Day

The crew's phone shows the load size, the items, what is going (“Brush pile behind the garage, about a car's worth”), access notes and the haul-to spot. Before and after photos in the crew app show the cleared yard. If the pile turns out heavier or bigger than expected, the crew pauses and talks to the customer before loading the rest.
