Choosing Junk Removal Scheduling Software: What to Check Before You Switch

Plenty of software can put a job on a calendar. Much less of it understands that a junk job is a load size, a pile of items, a crew, and a dump somewhere between this stop and the next. Before you move your company onto anything, it's worth checking whether it actually thinks like a junk hauler.

Know What You're Moving From

The move itself is covered in Moving Junk Removal Scheduling Off Paper, Spreadsheets and the Group Text. This guide is the step before: how to judge whether a system is worth moving to. Whether you're coming from paper, spreadsheets, generic field-service software or one of the big franchise systems, the questions are the same.

1. Does Every Job Know Its Size?

The most important scheduling fact about a junk job is how much of the truck it takes. Check whether each job can carry a load size — Min Load, fractions of a truck, Full Load, multiple loads — plus the item count and a plain description of what's going. If the only field is a notes box, you'll be doing the load math in your head forever.

2. Can You See Unbooked Work on a Map?

A list of requests isn't enough. You need to see unbooked work on a map next to what's already scheduled, so you can book the couch on the day you're already nearby. Ask whether single items, cleanouts and estimate visits all show up there. This is the feature that most changes how full your trucks run. See The Waiting List Map: Seeing Every Unbooked Junk Request Before You Plan Tomorrow.

3. Does It Route From Your Yard, and Let You Override It?

Check that it can put a truck's day in driving order from where your trucks start, with a choice of direction like Closest First or Furthest First. Then check that you can change the order by hand. Auto-routing that can't be adjusted will fight you every time a customer needs the early slot.

4. Does It Plan for the Dump?

Ask how the crew knows where each load goes. A haul-to stop on every job — dump, transfer station, donation center or metal recycler — with one-tap navigation from the crew's phone is the difference between a planned unload and a crew calling to ask which site. If you bill for weight, check whether a dump ticket's tons can turn into a line on the invoice without a calculator.

5. Is There a Board by Day and Truck?

With two trucks, you need to see each truck's day on its own and the whole company's day together. Check for a dispatch board you can filter by truck, saved views so you don't rebuild filters every morning, and route sheets for the crew that wants paper.

6. What Does the Crew Actually Use?

Your crew will judge the software by their phone. Check that the crew app shows the day in route order, with load size, items, access notes and past notes on each card, Go buttons to the customer and the dump, Start / Skip / Complete, and before and after photos. Ask whether it needs an app store download or runs in the browser on the phones they already own. Check whether completing a job creates the invoice and can charge a card on file.

7. Does It Talk to Customers for You?

Look for automatic on-the-way and arrived texts, night-before reminders, customers choosing their own alerts, and two-way texting that comes back to the office. A customer app with a live route map is a real plus for junk work, where customers often need to be home.

8. Can It Handle Repeat Accounts?

If you work with property managers or realtors, check for one client with many addresses and one monthly statement covering every address. That's what turns trash-outs into steady work instead of a pile of small invoices.

9. Is the Price Simple?

Check what you'd actually pay as you add trucks and crew, and whether scheduling, routing and the crew app cost extra. JunkBossPro plans are Start at $59 per month, Pro at $89 and Crew at $199, with scheduling and dispatch on every plan and a 14-day free trial with no credit card.
